The Verdict
Vivarium is an original surreal horror about a couple trapped in an artificial suburb and forced to raise an alien child. Its only thematic edge is a metaphorical critique of suburban conformity and the entrapment of domestic life, which is woven into the nightmare rather than preached. It contains essentially no identity messaging, swaps, or LGBTQ+ content — clean on nearly every axis.
What the AI Flagged
Category explanations and examples behind the assessment. Internal category scores and the exact calculation are private; external sources appear below when available.
Identity Swaps
Original sci-fi premise with no established characters to swap.
Girlboss & Male Demotion
A heterosexual couple share the ordeal; the man deteriorates and dies first, but this is plot-driven dread, not a message diminishing men.
- Tom becomes obsessed with digging and physically wastes away
- Gemma is the more emotionally engaged caretaker of the child
LGBTQ+ / Trans / Non-Binary Content
No LGBTQ+, trans, or non-binary content; the central couple is straight.
DEI Casting
Cast fits the contemporary setting with no quota-driven choices.
Preachiness
The film satirizes suburban conformity and the trap of domesticity/parenthood, but folds its themes into surreal horror rather than lecturing.
- Identical green houses as a metaphor for soulless suburban life
- The forced parenthood of an alien child critiques nuclear-family expectations
Anti-Masculinity / Anti-West
No framing of masculinity, whiteness, or the West as villainous.
Source Betrayal
Original screenplay with no source material to betray.
