The Verdict
The Book of Life is a vibrant, culturally authentic animated film celebrating Mexican Día de los Muertos traditions. Its diversity is organic to the setting and its themes of love and following your heart are woven into the story rather than preached. Essentially clean of identity messaging across the board.

Maria is independent and capable but the film centers two male leads; no anti-male messaging.

Preachiness
Themes of writing your own story and following your heart are folded naturally into the plot, not lectured.
- Following one's heart vs family expectations theme
