The Verdict
Shrinking is a character-driven dramedy about grief and therapy with a warm, diverse contemporary ensemble. It includes some LGBTQ+ supporting storylines and the earnest, occasionally preachy tone typical of a show about therapy, but it carries no identity-swap, anti-male, or agenda-pushing baggage. Its progressive elements feel organic to the setting rather than heavy-handed messaging.

Category explanations and examples behind the assessment. Internal category scores and the exact calculation are private; external sources appear below when available.
Identity Swaps
Original series with original characters; no established characters to swap.
Girlboss & Male Demotion
Male lead Jimmy is flawed but centered and sympathetic; female characters are strong but not at men's expense, no anti-male messaging.
- Jimmy's flaws drive the story without being framed as 'men are the problem'
- Gaby and Liz are capable but supportive characters
LGBTQ+ / Trans / Non-Binary Content
Includes LGBTQ+ supporting characters and storylines (notably Jimmy's daughter's queer arc and other queer side characters) woven into the ensemble without being central.
- Alice's relationships and queer-coded teen arc
- Side characters with same-sex relationships folded into the ensemble
DEI Casting
Diverse ensemble cast for a contemporary California setting; plausible and not lore-breaking.
- Gaby as a Black therapist colleague
- Paul and the diverse patient roster
Preachiness
Therapy-driven show that discusses mental health, grief, and self-improvement, occasionally edging into earnest life lessons but mostly character-driven.
- Frequent therapy-session monologues on healing
- Earnest emotional talks about grief and growth
Anti-Masculinity / Anti-West
No framing of masculinity, whiteness, or the West as toxic; Jimmy is a sympathetic male lead.
