The Verdict

Prey is a lean, well-crafted survival thriller that earns its female lead through demonstrated skill rather than ideology. Naru is a competent protagonist and the cast fits its Comanche historical setting authentically, so accusations of wokeness are largely overstated. The mild anti-colonial framing of the French trappers is the only ideological edge, and it never overtakes the story. Overall very clean on identity messaging.

What the AI Flagged

Each axis scored 0–100, with the receipts. The headline score weights the worst offense, so a single egregious element isn't diluted by the rest.

Identity Swaps

10

Naru is a brand-new original character, not a swap of an established Predator-franchise figure.

Girlboss & Male Demotion

40

Naru is a highly capable female lead who proves herself against doubting men, and several male warriors are shown as arrogant or incompetent, but it's framed as her earning recognition rather than an explicit anti-men message.

  • Naru's brother and fellow hunters dismiss her abilities until she repeatedly outsmarts them
  • The French trappers are portrayed as brutal and foolish

LGBTQ+ / Trans / Non-Binary Content

0

No LGBTQ+, trans, or non-binary content present.

DEI Casting

15

An overwhelmingly Comanche cast playing Comanche characters fits the historical setting naturally rather than functioning as a quota.

  • Comanche characters portrayed by Indigenous actors, appropriate to the 1719 Great Plains setting

Preachiness

15

The story stays focused on survival and the hunt without stopping to lecture; themes of proving oneself are folded into the plot.

Anti-Masculinity / Anti-West

35

The white French trappers are depicted as cruel colonizers and some male hunters as arrogant, giving a mild anti-colonial/masculinity undertone, but it is not a sustained sermon.

  • French fur trappers shown skinning buffalo and treating Comanche brutally
  • Male hunters' overconfidence gets them killed while Naru's caution prevails

Source Betrayal

10

A prequel set in a new time and culture; it introduces an original protagonist rather than rewriting an established franchise character with an agenda.
