The Verdict
Meg 2: The Trench is a straightforward Jason Statham monster-action blockbuster with essentially no identity messaging. Its diverse, internationally-flavored cast reflects the China co-production rather than any agenda, and a token eco-villain plot is the closest it gets to a message. Score it low across the board — this is popcorn, not preaching.
What the AI Flagged
Category explanations and examples behind the assessment. Internal category scores and the exact calculation are private; external sources appear below when available.
Identity Swaps
No established characters are race or gender-swapped; original characters in a creature feature.
Girlboss & Male Demotion
Has competent female characters but Jason Statham remains the central hero; no male-demotion messaging.
LGBTQ+ / Trans / Non-Binary Content
No notable LGBTQ+, trans, or non-binary characters or themes.
DEI Casting
International, partly Chinese-led cast reflecting the co-production, which fits the setting naturally.
- Chinese research team and setting given the China co-production
Preachiness
A villainous illegal mining operation gives a faint environmental angle but it stays subordinate to monster action.
- Antagonists run an illegal deep-sea mining operation
Anti-Masculinity / Anti-West
No framing of masculinity or the West as villainous; Statham's hero is straightforwardly heroic.
Source Betrayal
Loosely based on Steve Alten's novels with typical creative liberties, none identity-driven.
